“Hooray Katie Wins!”

“Hooray Katie Wins!” is our book give away program for Lane County HEAD START children and area Title I schools’ kindergarten through third grade students.

Why do we give books away?
Giving books to children is one of the cornerstones of our foundation. Research supports the need for families to have home libraries and for children to experience the joys and pride of book ownership.

“This is a large effect, both absolutely and in comparison with other influences on education,” adds the research team, led by University of Nevada sociologist M.D.R. Evans. “A child from a family rich in books is 19 percentage points more likely to complete university than a comparable child growing up without a home library.”

New York Time columnist David Brooks observes that it is not just the physical presence of books to disadvantaged kids that makes the biggest impact. It is the change in the way students see themselves as they build a home library. “They see themselves as readers, as members of different group.”
